LB Bowman ready to play

One question about fall practice to Navorro Bowman at Penn State’s media day was all it took to gauge where the linebacker’s mind is as he readies for the 2009 season.

“It felt great on Monday, a little less on Tuesday, then I realized we’re in camp,” Bowman joked amidst the heat on Aug. 13. “But it feels great.

Jack Ham could always engage an audience, and he can still crush a brick in his bare hands. So in a careful, timid tone we asked the former Penn State All-American and Pittsburgh Steelers legend for some assistance with a story on the best-ever linebackers in PSU history. Fans and fanatics alike know Ham from his glory days as a member of the “Steel Curtain,” the famed Pittsburgh unit that steered the Steelers to four Super Bowl titles. After 12 sensational seasons, Ham was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. Not bad for a lightly recruited player from Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, who prepped at Massanutten Military Academy in Virginia before securing the final Penn State scholarship that Joe Paterno had to give in 1966.
