RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP: THE BEST DOGS FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN
If you have children, especially small children, you need a dog that can tolerate kids. Not all dog breeds are good for families with children. Many people assume that small dogs are gentle and kid friendly, which is not always true. Some small breeds are gentle with kids. However, large dogs in the working class, herding dogs and retrievers are more placid by nature and often have the patience of a saint when around young children. DOG NEWS DAILY ROUNDUP
*
A Pennsylvania Animal Rescue Group is offering to donate dog food to shelters in exchange for tackles of Michael Vick. According to the Los Angeles Times, Main Line Animal Rescue is buying ads in “newspapers in cities where Vick and his new NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, will play. The group’s plan: Buy ad space in a city’s newspaper shortly before the Eagles are to visit. The ads (one of which has already run in the Washington Post) urge animal lovers to “Consider volunteering at your local shelter on the day of the game. Spend some time walking, or brushing, or bathing, or hugging a homeless Pit Bull.” Future ads are scheduled to appear in San Diego, Chicago and New York.” (more…)
RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP: DOGS & TOADS
Toads are great to have in your garden. They dine on bugs and are a natural pest control. Dogs love to investigate anything that moves and toads are no exception. Toads are everywhere and can pose a health hazard to an unwary dog who may happen upon one. Dogs and toads are not good playmates. In fact, in a game of toad-catching by the dog, it’s usually the toad 1 and dog 0, which leaves the dog shaking his head and foaming at the mouth.
Toads are found in wet places like backyards during and after a rain and around ponds. Other than an irritating bad taste in a dog’s mouth, most toads are not toxic enough to cause great harm to your dog. Since toads are nocturnal, it’s important to be vigilant when your dog is outside at night for his walk or run before bed, especially during or after a rain. (more…)
